My Background and Philosophy...
After spending my entire childhood on the south side of St. Louis, I left home to attend college at the University of Missouri (Go Tigers!) in 2003. I received my Bachelors in Journalism (Writing and Editing) with minors in English and Sociology. I then spent two years living in Chicago, working as a writer/journalist and volunteering in local schools. I was always passionate about education and urban issues, so I decided to move back to my hometown in 2009 to teach and try to make my city a better place to live. I worked as an AmeriCorps literacy tutor for one year in St. Louis Public Schools and spent two years subbing and teaching in the University City School District. After earning my Masters in Teaching from Webster University, I taught at Jennings Senior High for a year. Now, I am excited to have finally found a home at Grand Center Arts Academy - a school that shares my vision of education and inspires me every day. In my free time, I like to cook, hike, take walks in Tower Grove Park, cuddle with my dog, read, write, listen to music, hang out with my friends and travel.
I teach for many reasons, some of them include:
-I love thinking about and questioning the world around me (and pushing others to do the same)
-I believe educating and empowering citizens is the only way to achieve a fair and equal democracy
-I noticed many inequalities in education, and I wanted to help bridge that gap
-I believe all people deserve the opportunity to be successful and happy (and to define what that means for themselves)
-I love working with young people - they make me laugh, inspire me and challenge me every day
-I like to read and write, and I hope to help others gain the confidence to feel that way too
